The majority of our flat painted signs are made of MDO (medium density overlay) signboard. Other substrates available for painted signage are metal, HDU (high density urethane), glass, magnetic sheeting and vinyl banner stock. We also apply flat painted lettering directly to vehicles, window glass and masonry walls. Painted signs can be single- or double-sided and can range from under one square foot to billboard size in area.
Framed signs can be given smalted backgrounds for an authentic antique look. Smalt is coarsely ground black (usually) glass, adhered to the sign surface, in the area surrounding the letters. Smalted backgrounds are commonly associated with 23K Goldleaf letters, but not exclusively.
23K Goldleaf lettering on glass is achieved by adhering gold to the inside of a glass window or sign by means of a water-based gelatin sizing. The gold is then finished in one of a number of ways, in age-old, "lost art" fashion. Goldleaf lettering on a glass storefront or office carries the ultimate in prestige and permanence.
